The modern Mario Kart series is widely considered to trace its spiritual origins to the Famicom Grand Prix games, which were released for the Japan-only Famicom Disk System add-on these were the first Nintendo racing games to feature Mario as a player-character.įollowing the Japanese launch of F-Zero, a Super Nintendo Entertainment System game which was exclusively single-player, Nintendo developers decided to create a two-player racing game for that console as a follow-up. The Mario Kart series was originally produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, and designed by Hideki Konno. Since then, every game in the series has had online play in some form. The first game in the series to go on Wi-Fi was Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS. The first game in the series was Super Mario Kart for the SNES. It features many different characters from the Mario series as they race to the finish line on unique and different tracks (compared to other racing titles) as they toss plenty of items at the player and other opponents. The games in the series have sold a combined total of over 100 million copies worldwide. It has also been referenced in the Paper Mario role-playing series and inspired several stages in the Super Smash Bros. The success of Mario Kart has spawned many cartoon-style racing games published by various gaming companies from the 16-bit generation onwards.

There have been a total of 16 titles in the series: 5 for home consoles, 3 portable games, 4 arcade games co-developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, 1 slot machine developed by Maygay, 1 arcade game developed by Banpresto and Atlus, a port, and a mobile game. It was inaugurated in 1992 with its debut entry, Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which was critically and commercially successful. And given that I can still play rainbow road on DD with constant boosts and not fall off once, I definitely never thought the controls were loose.Mario Kart (Japanese: マリオカート Mario Kāto) is a series of kart racing games developed and published by Nintendo as a spin-off of its flagship Mario franchise. I don't think it is nostalgia, as I still regularly play DD with my brother, but I wish they would have left the above features in for future MK games, they really made DD the best in the series for me. In MK7 you have this dumb auto boost where it just happens if you wait long enough, you have no control, and it feels super slow. And you could get better at it with practice. You could fully control it, and you could get little boosts in a second or two even during straight sections. And finally, DD had far and away the best boosting system, wiggling the stick. When I play MK7, my hands hurt from holding down the L button for defense the whole race.

Plus there was no god damn holding of the L button. Plus you could have a character that had a good item when you were winning and another with a good item if you were losing and switch when you wanted. For example, having two different characters in your kart let you save items, so you could have a banana for defense while still trying for a good offensive item. Every Mario kart game since has removed features that made DD great. Man half of you guys are crazy, I played DD with almost never letting go of the slide button and it never felt hard to control at all.
